Great Lakes Ecosystems
Before
I moved to Illinois, I had never thought very much about the Great
Lakes. However, after I was in the Midwest for a while, I found myself
spending more and more time reading about these lakes and their
fascinating history and ecology. I am especially interested in the
issue of how the accidental introduction of non-native species such as
European mysid shrimp, zebra mussels, sea lampreys, and the round goby
changed the dynamics of the ecology of the Lakes. The North American
Great Lakes constitute a freshwater ecosystem on a scale unmatched
anywhere in the world, and if you explore some of the links provided
below you may develop the same appreciation for the Lakes as I have.
