The Medieval "universe"

Time had two divisions:

- Brief, insignificant time in which sinful life takes place
- Cosmically enduring time in which suffering or joy of soul will occur

Intolerance of nonconformity & abnormality
(Any deviation must be the work of the devil)

A hierarchy was everywhere

- Everything in the world symbolized something supernatural - clues to the invisible reality of God in heaven
- In an odd way, universe was human-centered and predictable.

Superstition, magic, witchcraft, astrology, belief in demons.
(If the God contemplated through introspection was real, why not other things?)

Ptolemaic, Earth-centered physical universe

World would end in the year 1000
