Post-Renaissance Advances In Science

Modern science was born at the end of the Renaissance. Empiricism coupled with reason gradually became more acceptable, although there was still resistance from the church and the philosophical establishment.

Early Scientists:

- Nicolai Copernicus (1473-1543) - Heliocentric Theory

- Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) Ð Dominican Monk, spread Copernican ideas

- Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) - Brought Copernican Theory to common people; pioneered use of the telescope.

- Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) - Danish Astronomer; compiled empirical observations

- Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) - German mathematician/astronomer; compiled laws of planetary motion; laid groundwork for Newton & development of calculus

- Francis Bacon (1561-1629) - Science based on Induction

- Isaac Newton (1642-1727) - Math & Physics; Universe as complex, lawful machine created by God (religious).
