Professional Behavior

(EDUC 201)

1. Proper conduct at the workplace:

That means showing the proper degree of deference to senior personnel, such as administrators and faculty. It means behaving like an adult. It means talking like an adult. It means being properly respectful toward everyone you interact with. If you are working with children, it means setting a good example for them.

2. Professional dress:

Generally you should interpret this in accord with how the other adults dress. You should dress at least as well as they do. You should keep yourself clean, neat and combed, and modestly attired. Keep in mind that you represent both “adult authority” and “Knox College” to the kids, and “Knox College” to the adults.

3. Attendance:

Generally, any absence from your assignment for any reason is inappropriate. Once you have established your schedule, the people in charge will come to count on your being there (and so will the kids if you are working with kids). Thus, your absence during a scheduled time will disrupt things. Therefore, be there when you are supposed to be. If you aren’t going to be there, let the person in charge know ahead of time. Act like a teacher: be responsible

4. Relationships with students:

Don’t form relationships other than professional ones with the students or other clients with whom you are working. Be warm, friendly and caring, but maintain a professional distance. Whatever else you do, keep it professional.
