The Progressive Education Movement

The Progressive Education movement (1920-1950 roughly), embraced the philosophy of John Dewey.  The progressive educators took issue with the old curriculum and methodology (largely memorization and recitation). 

1.  They were concerned with students’ needs, interests, and development.  2.  They wanted materials of instruction that would be interesting to children. 

3.  They favored the use of concrete learning materials.

4.  They wanted children to have diverse experiences with a variety of people and places. 

5.  They advocated purposeful activities focused on individual and group goals
