Annotated Bibliography

Assignment

It is important that you have a set of resources you can use for building lessons and unit plans. Therefore, you will be developing an annotated bibliography during the term. The bibliography items and focus may be of your own choosing, but must address the course objectives and must be directly relevant to teaching in your field. Each student will prepare a bibliography of at least 20 book-length items. One of the items must be an investigation of the website of the national organization connected with your discipline of study (e.g., NCSS, NCTS, NCTM, NCTE, NAEA, MENC). The bibliography will be due as indicated on the course calendar. (10%)

1. Choose a set of references you plan to include in your bibliography. Be sure that the references you include are relevant and age- and grade-appropriate.

2. You'll present your references in a typed or word-processed paper. Begin each reference with a complete bibliographic entry in APA style. Each reference should include your critical evaluation of the reference. Entries should never exceed one-page; nor should they be more than a couple of sentences less than a full-page.

3. Your evaluations should be clear and well-written, and should reflect your understanding of the topic. They should be summary evaluations. That is, they should provide a clear summary of the work and a well-reasoned judgement of the work relative to your level and subject of teaching.

4. Be sure your evaluations are thoughtful. Comments such as, "I really liked this...." don't tell enough about the resource.

5. EDIT CAREFULLY! Editing will be counted into the grade.

6. The completed bibliography is due as indicated on the course calendar.

The bibliographies will be graded on the following criteria: quantity, relevance, use of APA style, depth and length of discussion, writing and editing, timeliness.
