Kansas Night

Lightning exploding behind dark clouds,

Waterspouts spilling on concrete,

Dark trees glowing in streetlights,

Porchlights framed by darkness,

Geraniums in antique cast-iron pots,

Framed by the rims of glasses

And smudged by dark thoughts

Symbolized by far-off thunder,

I wonder what she's doing now.

But the tiger worm drags me back

Kicking and screaming silently

As the song fails to soothe.

A car gushes by in the wet street.

The rain falls in the cool breeze

And hot coffee warms me a little.
