CAREER OBJECTIVE

                  My primary career objective is to continue to help pre-service teachers, especially pre-service English teachers, become competent, caring, knowledgeable professionals, and continue to research and learn about how that is best done. I’m also very interested in the effects of the Standards Movement and am particularly interested in the preparation of Native American teachers and in culturally-appropriate, culturally-responsive, place-based pedagogy.

June 11 to July 19, 2001. Taught Web Design and Culturally-Appropriate Science Teaching at Shiprock Alternative School, Inc., in Shiprock, NM. This project was funded by grants from Knox College, the Oettinger Foundation, and the Navajo Nation Rural Systemic Initiative. 1990 President of Missouri Folklore Society.  Volunteered at Springfield Area Learning Disabilities Center, teaching secretary how to use an Apple computer.  Conducted annual Spring meeting of Missouri Folklore Society Board of Directors.  Spoke to Laclede County Historical Society (Lebanon, MO) on Folklore and History.  Conducted a workshop on "Missouri's Living Folklore" at the annual Missouri State Teachers Association meeting at SMSU.  Co-organized Missouri Folklore Society's participation in Springfield's (MO) ArtsFest '90.  (Two days of traditional music and crafts and an Old Time Fiddle Contest.)  Served as Placement Essay reader in SMSU's SOAR program.  Featured guest on "Springfield Scene," a locally produced television talk show.  Spoke on Missouri Folklore.  Organized and hosted the annual meeting of the Missouri Folklore Society in Hannibal, MO, Oct. 25 - 27, 1990.  Organized and hosted a Folk Music concert to raise money to establish Ozarks Folklore Society.

1992 President, Ozarks Folklore Society.  Conducted a seminar on desktop publishing for Apple Squires club, 2/15/92.  Spoke to Head-Start area policy planning board on the role of parents in the classroom, Waynesville, MO, 3/9/92.  Spoke to a senior citizens organization about Ozarks folklore, 3/16/92.  Performed in "Voices from the Ho Chi Minh Trail" at the Popular Culture Association meeting in Louisville, KY, 3/19/92.  Three two-hour presentations on my research in Ozarks Folklore at Marshfield, Camdenton and Stoutland, MO, public libraries, 4/6/92.  Guest lecturer on Vonnegut's Sirens of Titan, SMSU, 4/9/92.

1997 Served on grade appeals committee (ad hoc), College of Education, U of A.  Co-conducted two seminars on supervising student teachers for new supervisors (January & March).  Volunteered eight times to help administer writing examination to applicants to the Initial Teacher Prep. program.  Conducted monthly staff development workshops for faculty and staff at Theodore Roosevelt Indian Boarding School, Fort Apache, AZ, January - May.  Spoke to Pi Lambda Theta (National Education Honor Society), 3/12/97. Co-presented a one-hour workshop on "Thinking Like A Teacher" to participants in the University of Arizona -- College of Education "Summer Institute for Careers in Education," June 5, 1997.  Taught two independent study courses on "Computers in the Classroom."  Served on departmental committee to transition Physical Education personnel into our department.  Nov. 7, 1997, Judge, "Student Showcase," sponsored by Graduate and Professional Students Association and the U of A Graduate College.
1998 Taught a course in Classroom Processes and Instruction off campus.  Volunteered twice to help administer writing examination to applicants to the Initial Teacher Prep. program.  Served on the T&TE Department's Initial Teacher Preparation Committee and on the transition committee for integrating the Physical Education personnel into the department.  Served as paid consultant to 9th edition of Joel Spring's American Education (McGraw-Hill).  Chaired a paper session at the annual meeting of the Missouri Folklore Society, Hannibal, MO, Oct. 24, 1998.  Elected to a 3-year term on the Board of Directors, Missouri Folklore Society.  Appointed Book Review Editor, Missouri Folklore Society Journal.
1999 Served on the Board of Directors, Missouri Folklore Society, and as Book Review Editor, Missouri Folklore Society Journal.  Attended the annual meeting of the MFS in Sikeston,MO, on Oct. 28 -30, and participated in the Board of Directors' meeting.  I helped the Educational Studies faculty take a group of pre-service teachers to, and myself attended, the annual teacher education Quincy Conference in Quincy, IL, on Oct.  7.
2000 Served on the Board of Directors, Missouri Folklore Society, and as Book Review Editor, Missouri Folklore Society Journal.  Attended the annual meeting of the MFS in Fulton, MO, and participated in the Board of Directors' meeting.
2001 Served on the Board of Directors, Missouri Folklore Society, and as Book Review Editor, Missouri Folklore Society Journal.  Attended the MFS Board of Directors' meeting in Columbia, MO, on Feb. 5.  Attended the annual meeting of the MFS in Kansas City, MO, on Oct. 10 - 12, where I functioned as Exhibit Coordinator for the conference and participated in the Board of Directors' meeting. Taught an independent study course, EDUC 250 -- Educational Television -- Spring term 2001.

Taught an independent study course, EDUC 350 -- Methods of Teaching Secondary English -- Winter term 2002, and EDUC 250 -- Native American Folklore -- Spring term 2002. Participated in the week-long "Teaching with Technology in the Social Sciences" workshop at Grinnell College, sponsored by the Midwest Instructional Technology Center, June 8-14.  Attended the annual meeting of the Missouri Folklore Society (Nov. 7-9, 2002) in Potosi, MO.  Participated in a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Missouri Folklore Society (Nov. 7, 2002) in Potosi, M0.  Served as a judge on the Missouri Folklore Society committee to evaluate submissions for the Society's annual student research paper contest.  Attended a workshop on Teaching Literacy hosted and conducted by the Illinois State Board of Education in Springfield, IL, on 10/25/02.   Attended the annual meeting of the Illinois Association of Teacher Educators at Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL, on 11/14/02. Dec. 2002, served as peer-review of articles submitted for publication in Teachers College Record.

Attended the Missouri Folklore Society Board of Directors' meeting in Columbia, MO, on Jan. 25. Served on the Nominating committee of the Illinois Association of Teacher Educators.  Taught an independent study course, EDUC 350 --Methods of Teaching Secondary English --Winter term 2003, and EDUC 350 --Native American Folklore --Winter term 2003.  Served on the Knox College Instructional Support Committee.  1/20/03 -- participated in training as Program Reviewer for ISBE and, in April, participated in the review of three programs.  Elected to a three-year term as College/University Representative for the Illinois Association of Teacher Educators.

Winter Term 2004: Taught a 1-credit Independent Study course on “Subject Area Methods for Middle School.” Winter Term 2004: Taught a 1-credit Independent Study on “Social Studies Content for Elementary.” Spring Term 2004: Taught a 1/2 credit Independent Study course entitled “Grammar for Teachers.” Six Ed. Studies students took the course. Spring Term 2004: Taught a 1/2-credit Independent Study in “Teaching Kurt Vonnegut.” Spring Term 2004: Participated in the team teaching of School of Social Sciences-wide course entitled “Election 2004.” Served on the Knox College Instructional Support Committee. Participated in the review of three teacher education programs for ISBE. Served as Golden Apple liaison. Served as College/University Representative to the Illinois Association of Teacher Educators. Served as peer reviewer of articles submitted for publication to the scholarly journal Teachers College Record.
