Three trees  (2014)

Commercial fabric, couched silk-wrapped paper thread

4 x 6 inches

Walking in the woods one winter, I noticed trees growing in a clump of three and made some sketches. Then, wherever I went, I found more. Something appealed deeply to me in these trees—at once individuals and in a connected relationship. I found myself thinking of it as a stand-in for the relationship between David, me, and Jeremy.  I originally intended to do a very large piece, dyeing dark brown/gray fabrics for the tree-trunks. But the line drawing I'd done as a sketch had its own beauty, and I decided to go in that direction instead. I tried it larger, but the small-size worked better to convey the quiet stillness I was after.
