College
Essay
Today in World Literature we were given an assignment to write a college admissions paper. Our college counselor visited the class and explained the general format for the paper, then went off on the familiar ‘have this’ or ‘don’t put this’ speech. He started by listing the obvious essay-related mistakes such as accidental spelling errors, adding un-needed complex language, and not having an extra page to include your final sentence. Later, he incorporated more of the specifics regarding the paper like not mentioning the greatest traits of the college. Throughout the speech, the point he stressed the most was to not begin with the sentence ‘Hi, my name.’ Apparently, he felt college admissions will find it boring. Keeping the above in mind, please enjoy my first attempt at a college admissions essay. For me, seventh grade was when school really begun dealing with complicated subjects. There’s one incident which I remember from that year, our science class was doing a lab which we were to identify the specimen seen through a microscope. I was given a cracked microscope so I was unable to see properly, I just wrote down ‘crack’ in my lab for what I saw; the teacher took it the wrong way and it resulted in an argument. That experience has been stuck in my mind ever since and it’s a reminder of how the teachers perception of students changes throughout the years. Every year after that has just been harder and harder for me. You could say that the complexities of each grade run parallel to the circles in the book Dante’s Inferno, where the higher you go, the worse it gets. Grades always took a moderate amount of work to maintain. I received around a C average every year without ever having to repeat a class. Sports are a topic which I have moderate experience with. From early childhood up until around seventh grade I was a soccer player, though the game has lost some of its appeal to me now. I also tried basketball, football, and baseball; each for just one year. None except football could maintain a sufficient level of interest to stay involved. Football was extremely exciting for me to play and I enjoyed every game, except practice was what drove me against the sport. There are some subjects which I would love to learn more about. Greek mythology enthralls me and I want to learn all there is to know about it. Even some historic figures have caught my eye and leave me longing to know more about them, the most prominent of them is Nicolo Machiavelli. I recently purchased a couple books that contain information on Greek mythology, I find the books to be very interesting and I wish to continue learning about the Greek gods and heroes for along time. Each figure, from Zeus through Hades, captures a part of me which many topics cannot. |
