Lyrics / Dante Comparison: “Stop Being Greedy” / Canto 6

DMX, a renowned rap artist and becoming actor, is unquestionably held as one of the best at creating lyrics with an unmatched style.  Whether it’s portraying the life of a poor child struggling through ghetto, or unleashing fierce verbal attacks on his enemies through rap “diss” songs, incredible talent is almost always clear.  His song “Stop Being Greedy” deals with the increasingly problem of selfishness between people.  This can be easily related with Canto Six, which involves gluttony.

Canto Six of Dante’s Inferno has a three-headed dog name Cerberus tear away at the souls of the greedy as their punishment.  DMXs verse, “Dogs bite, dogs fight…” entails that dogs can be a very dangerous animal, which relates to Cerberus.  Another verse in his song is, “Two glowin’ red eyes, everything else is black.”  This can be referenced to Cerberus, because he is described as having red eyes and Hell is most always seen as a dark place.

There are also plenty of differences between the “Stop Being Greedy” and Canto Six.  A later verse of his song is, “When does it all end, I found a friend in a dog.”  This contradicts the perception of the dog, Cerberus, in Canto Six.
