Hobbies and Enthusiasms
- Stearman airplanes - One of the best things to happen in Galesburg is the annual Stearman airplane fly-in. Over a hundred of the old aircraft will arrive in town. I've gotten to fly one twice. There is nothing like having the wind in your face and nothing but blue sky above.
- Old pick-up trucks are one of the outstanding achievements of American engineering. They were simple, strong, and reliable - designed to do a simple job and they did it well. With them, form really followed function. I love the late 40's to mid-50's vintage Internationals, Advanced Design Chevys and similar vintage Dodges. I used to own, but recently sold, a 1956 International - you can see my (former) fine cornbinder here or you can find out more about old pick up trucks here.
- Morris Minor - The ultimate simple, reliable, and classic vehicle in the British Isles is the Morris Minor. I really like the woody wagons - better known as Travelers.
- Futbol, called soccer by us Yanks, is the greatest team sport in the world. I play on the Knox College faculty-staff team, the Academia Nuts. We don't have our own webpage, but we are the current campus intramural futbol champions.
- Shrewsbury Town Football Club are the team I support the most. Why? Well, why not. Shrewsbury was the home of Charles Darwin, a hero to all biologists. Shrewsbury also feature in the film "Spinal Tap" - or at least a Shrewsbury jersey features prominently as it is worn by Derek Smalls in about half the film. And Shrewsbury Town FC are known as "The Mighty Shrews" which is a fantastic nickname.
- Wallace and Gromit. - If you don't know about Wallace and Gromit - the best claymation cartoons in the world (sorry Gumby) and the most fun couple to come out of Lancashire - you must check out this site.
- Poetry - Everybody should love poetry. Check out some great poetry with the Favorite Poem Project. I contributed to it - you should too.
- Gardening - Holly and I both enjoy gardening. We haven't tried to do that via the web yet, but I'm sure it is possible.
- Paddle-sports - When I was a younger lion, I worked as a white-water rafting guide for Echo - The Wilderness Company. They're an excellent company - if you want a great river trip, contact them. Tell Dick and Joe that I sent you. I still like to do as much paddling as possible, though now it is usually canoeing placid midwestern rivers and lakes.
