SUMMER RESEARCH REPORT

During my sophomore year here in Knox I was awarded a "Hughes Fellowship."  This fellowship grants Knox students the opportunity to develop a summer research project under faculty supervision.  As you suspect, my summer research involved Mossbauer Spectroscopy.  This past summer I spent  10 weeks in the science and math building getting a hands-on introduction to Mossbauer Spectroscopy.  The largest parts of my project included the construction of a new stand for a closed cycle cryostat to be used in a new spectrometer setup; the translation of fitting modules of our Mossbauer software from FORTRAN to C++; and, learning the theory behind the Mossbauer Effect and its applications -- specifically to the study of iron porphyrins.
